Guess where we will be for Christmas????

Dec. 23-29, 2006: Munich, Salzburg, and Innsbruck (or some variation of the three or others). Why not? Jump on a plane for $540 and see where you can go. Be on the lookout for our REAL pictures from Europe post New Year's. Another reason to keep your passport up-to-date and readily accessible.

Thanksgiving 2006

We went to Ferguson, NC, to see my family for Thanksgiving 2006. One tradition is that all of the women go for a walk after the meal. Here are the lovely ladies. L-R: Jennifer Powell, Aunt Donna, Mama, Jeanette, Dawn, Heather, and Me. Aren't we beautiful?
And the younger....Heather, me, and Jennifer Powell (JP and her family have joined the McNeil/Mitchell Thanksgiving several times. We always love having friends there, too).

John and Sue Lancaster, good friends of Mama and Papa, were also at Thanksgiving this year. It was great to see them! L-R: Mama, Sue, John, and Papa.

After our Mitchell/McNeil thanksgiving, we headed over to Saluda, NC, to celebrate Thanksgiving with the McLeod/Harman clan. Here we all are for our holiday photo. L:R- Ashley, me, Holly, Carey, Weston (lower), Kleck, Robert, Ryan (in R's arms) and Debbie.

Carey and Kleck also attempted a family photo...the boys were cracking us up!
And this picture shows just how cute my nephews are! Ryan, 2, and Weston, 4.

October...traveling to PA& CO

This October I have been a traveling girl! From Pennsylvania to Colorado...and I caught up with my family along the way. Stop #1: Harrisburg, PA, Oct. 4-7, 2006. Mama and Papa joined me while I was at the National College Learning Center Association conference in Harrisburg, PA. We found this spectacular farm stand with lovely mums, pumpkins, etc. What great photos! And then we found a perfect sign for Charles A. Mitchell, aka Papa!
Stop #2: Boulder, CO, Oct. 19-22 to see Joshua and the lovely Pepper. Here's a picture of Joshua in his neighborhood. That Friday we drove to Vail to spend the night. Kelsey, Joshua's girlfriend, came along. She's great! It snowed on our way there...here's a photo as we're making our way over Loveland Pass. Perfect Mountain scene! On the way back from Vail on Saturday, we stopped at the Coor's factory and got to taste the freshest beer ever. Yum!

One of Joshua's projects....restoring this old Winnebago for a cross country snowboarding trip in February. I'm looking forward to hearing about that adventure.

Now Ashley and I will have to head out to visit. We're hoping to maybe go out to go snowmobiling.

Rock Jumping at Lake Murray

Perfect Sunday at Lake Murray with Stan & Lyndsey and Josh & Missy. We've discovered a boulder to jump off of...here are some photos of the guys taking on this challenge (I jumped last week but chickened out this time).

Where did August go?

It's August 30. Somehow the entire month of August has flown by, along with students coming back to campus, my second round of teaching University 101 starting, training 20+ graduate students how to do what I do (meet with students on academic success issues), and a ton of random other adventures.

Ashley and I have been home to Ferguson, NC, to say goodbye to our New Zealander friends, Sally, James and baby Jack Clendon; we've been to Saluda, NC, with Witney and Tim Fisher, where we thought about going tubing on the Green River but didn't; we had a Friday night party that was a lot of fun; and we were at Litchfield Beach this past weekend with some of Ashley's friends.

Work feels like organized chaos. Home life sometimes feels chaotically organized. But overall, I'm doing well. Our internet connection has been spotty at home so I haven't been able to upload photos to this site in a while...but I promise to get back to that soon. Maybe this Labor Day weekend will be good for that. If I can just get out on the lake on Saturday without Ernesto blowing away those plans, I'll be a happy Aquarius.

Buenos tardes, amigas y amigos!

Jumping through July...catching up

Somehow July has flown by and it's the 17th already. We've been in Gilbert for this month, enduring the heat but enjoying ourselves. One evening we rode around Ashley's parents' house and took some photos on the golf cart. Our beloved Max relaxing for a bit.
The golf cart is always a source of entertainment. This is probably one of my favorite pictures of Ashley because it captures him in his craziness (that's why we're a good fit).
Fourth of July in Gilbert is a HUGE holiday because of the annual Gilbert Peach Festival. Because of our involvement with the Webelos/Cub Scouts we helped a lot. We started the day off pulling the float (designed by Ashley--and the 2nd place winner in the civic non-professionally decorated category). It was a camping scene, complete with a tent and fire.
The younger boys rode in the back of the flatbed truck and pretended to be fishing. After the parade, we helped with the Car Show. Here's my favorite entry: Herby!!

Random WonderThoughts from Kids

"Sometimes I wonder why they even make candy."
(as he munched on Smarties and Tootsie Rolls from my candy bowl and we discussed how candy rots out your teeth)

"Sometimes I wonder why we talk...how we know what to say."
(it is amazing sometime, huh?)

These wonderthoughts brought to you by one of my co-workers kids. They stopped by to visit this morning.

I remember going to work with my parents when we weren't in school. I was always glad I had Joshua to play with because we always managed to keep ourselves entertained.

Key West

June 9-15, 2006 we went to Key West, Florida, with Mama and Papa. Ashley and I drove there (stopping in St. Augustine on the way down). A long drive but worth the trip! Our first night we went to Mallory Square to watch the famous Key West sunset and street performers. The Cat Man was not as great as I remembered from my other trips (he seemed to be on some serious drugs this time) but his felines still had talent. Here they are, jumping through a flaming hoop, over each other. The Custom House was beautiful, particularly in the sunset.
Unfortunately Tropical Storm Alberto (the first of the season) blew by Saturday and brought in rain and not-so-nice weather until Tuesday. Check out the stormy water at the Southernmost point! Here is the Southernmost Point on Wednesday...much sunnier! We rented a scooter on Wednesday and zoomed all over the island. This was probably one of our favorite things.Key West doesn't have a very large beach but it does have that tropical feel. We spent Wednesday afternoon beneath a palm tree, soaking up some sun. US Highway 1 (which runs through Gilbert, SC, among other places along the east coast) ends in Key West. Here's Ashley on our flashy scooter at the Mile 0 marker. I took a lot of pictures as we were zooming by on the scooter, including a few of us.Wednesday evening, Mama, Papa, Ashley and I went on a sunset cruise on a Fury catamaran. It was a perfect ending to our vacation. The pictures were amazing. My favorite is of a schooner as it glided past the setting sun.
Ashley got to help raise the sail on the catamaran.
On Thursday, we drove all the way home. In case you are curious...it takes 14 hours to drive from Key West to Gilbert (includes an oil change for the truck, lunch, gas, dinner, and gas again).

Sweet Rewards of Summertime

One of my favorite things about summer is picking blackberries and making a cobbler. Today I picked my first blackberries of the season -- enough to make a small cobbler. Yum! It's baking now.

Cobblers are incredibly easy to make. Here's the recipe I use:
1/2 cup of butter (1 stick)
2 cups of self-rising flour
2 cups of sugar
2 cups of milk
3 1/2 cups of blackberries (or other fruit)

Heat oven to 350. Once temperature is reached, melt butter in a 9x13 pan in the oven.
Stir together flour, sugar, and milk until lumpy.
Pour mixture onto butter (don't mix).
Drop blackberries into batter (don't mix).
Top with some extra sugar.
Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.
* This recipe is easy to divide in half. You also can decide how much crust you want. I like a little less and more berries.

Enjoy!

Back! Fulfilling a dream and walking behind a waterfall

Since seeing the cartoon Robin Hood as a little girl, I have wanted to find a waterfall to walk behind. Finally I did! Ashley and I visited Moore Cove Falls in Pisgah National Forest the weekend after I got back from London. Here's a shot from behind the falls. Classic Anna and Ashley--using the "we'll take our own picture" approach. Notice the lady at the bottom of this picture..that puts the waterfall into perspective. We climbed up to the ledge on the left-hand corner to get a better view. Amazing up there.
This view is looking down the Green River in Saluda, NC (about 30 minutes from the waterfall country of Transylvania County, NC. Ashley's parents' mountain house is in a valley after a 15 plus switchback road leading down from the top.
And in other news...the pontoon is getting ready to hit the lake. We've painted the sides, Ashley has laid the carpet...now he has to put all of the electronics back on and we'll be ready to go. Yippee!

London!

May 11-25 I travelled to London with a group of 16 students (post-Freshmen) and an art professor for a Capstone Abroad program. I served as the program assistant, which meant that I was responsible for all sorts of things--mainly logistics (getting us around on the Tube and the streets on London). It was fun to be back in the UK for two weeks but I definitely missed Ashley.
Big Ben and the London Eye with Minuette Floyd, the art education professor
Oxford University's Christchurch College, aka Hogwarts from Harry Potter
The complete group, plus our tour guide Adrian. The students were fantastic! We went to see The Woman in Black and it gave us all a good scare. A great play to see if you are in London!
The classic doubledecker bus.

and the beautiful Tower Bridge

*Unfortunately I accidently deleted the first 200 pictures from my digital camera so you will just have to use your imagination to see the changing of the guard, Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey, the River Thames cruise, Bath, Harrod's, etc.
